January 10, 2026 – Hawaii Kai Safe Sidewalks Project

Published by Webmaster on

On January 10, 2026, nine Hawaii Kai Lions, one CIS (Companion-in-Service), and three volunteers patched 43 areas on the east sidewalk of Keahole Street, starting at Kalanianaole Highway and ending at the driveway before Costco.  Tyler Sugihara, C&C Chief of Road Maintenance, provided information on how the Safe Sidewalks Project came to be and safety procedures for this project.  Then, City Council Chair Tommy Waters extended his appreciation to the Hawaii Kai Lions for all the volunteering we do.  Thereafter, C&C staff Richard Matsumoto demonstrated how to patch a sidewalk.

Our group was divided between two teams of five, with State Representative Joe Gedeon, his wife, and son, adding three more to one of the teams.  The weather was calm and cool, with plenty of shade from the large monkeypod trees planted next to the shopping center.  It was very pleasant, as compared to some of our patching projects where we were literally baking under the hot sun.  That evening, on Hawaii News Now, this project was featured in an informative clip from several pictures taken that day.
