July 18, 2026 – Safe Sidewalks Project
In coordination with the City & County of Honolulu’s Safe Sidewalk Project, the Hawaii Kai Lions Club has been patching sidewalks in the Hawaii Kai area since June of 2022. We plan at least 2 projects per year and have focused on sidewalks which are heavily used by the public; including near schools and major thoroughfares. We’ve had residents let us know how their friends or relatives have fallen on the cracked or uneven sidewalks, with one who actually broke her wrist.
On July 18, 2026, seven Hawaii Kai Lions and one CIS patched 40 areas on the east sidewalk of Kealahou Street in Kalama Valley, between the intersections of Hawaii Kai Drive and Mokuhano Street. There were two teams of five, which included two City & County staff members. Amazingly, the weather was breezy and cool, which made it easier to patch the entire length of the sidewalk. This project is actually a repatching, since we patched this section back in January 2024, but some of the patches were badly cracked, so a repatching seemed necessary. As we were about to leave, a car stopped to let us know that we were on this morning’s news. What a nice surprise!
