December 2, 2025 – HI-5 Sorting at Koko Head Elementary School

Several times a year, the cages at Koko Head Elementary School fill to capacity with HI?5 recyclable containers—along with some stray trash—that all need sorting. When the cages are opened, the roar of bottles and cans cascading out is almost deafening. Then the real work begins.
On December 2, 2025, bending, squatting, or perched on low stools, the Hawaii Kai Lions joined parents and students to uncap bottles (those caps aren’t recyclable!) and separate plastic, glass, and aluminum into large plastic bags. In just about two hours, the once?full cages stand empty, and the lawn is covered with neatly sorted bags of recyclables.
Thanks to these efforts, the Friends of Koko Head Elementary School earned more than $800 from the redeemed containers—funds that go directly toward supporting school activities.
